• Dear BitBacker Community, In June of 2018, a Japanese freelance designer who goes by the name "Moro-san" was arrested by the Kanagawa Prefectural Police for incorporating CoinHive into his website. The charge was "disseminating a virus", which is illegal under Japanese law. The story is detailed here: https://news.bitcoin.com/coinhive-users-investigated-japanese-police/ Moro-san had long discontinued his use of CoinHive by the time he was arrested, and in truth made next to no profits from the operation (as detailed in the article above). His case was brought to trial, and thankfully the judge acquitted him, ruling that CoinHive could not be considered a virus under the law, and that the lack of any significant harm made prosecution nonsensical. In spite of that, Japanese public prosecutors have decided to appeal this decision, forcing Moro-san to go through more onerous, and expensive, legal procedure while the threat of a criminal record looms over him. Regardless of CoinHive's reputation among crypto enthusiasts, this prosecution is excessive and unfair. The Japanese National Police Association has long been hostile to privacy coins, and the libertarian principles underpinning cryptocurrency. This prosecution is clearly an attack on the crypto space in Japan that dares to step out of the narrow regulatory box created by the Japanese government. In cooperation with the "Japan Hacker Association", Moro-san is crowdsourcing funds for his legal defense. I urge everybody in the libertarian crypto space to help contribute. A threat to one of us is a threat to all, and Moro-san deserves our support. Currently the legal fund only accepts BTC and Monacoin. We plan to contribute, and we hope you will too.
